Know Your Options

Furnace Types, Efficiency, and Sizing

Before repairing, installing, or replacing a furnace, it helps to understand what you’re working with.

Gas Furnaces

The most common type in North America. Runs on natural gas, generally lower operating cost, and pairs well with central air conditioning.

Electric Furnaces

No gas line needed and simpler installation, though typically higher to run than a gas furnace depending on local electricity rates.

Oil Furnaces

Common where natural gas isn’t available. Requires an on-site oil tank and more frequent service intervals.

AFUE Rating

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency measures how much fuel becomes usable heat. Furnaces range from around 80% to 98% AFUE, with higher-efficiency models costing more upfront but less to run.

Getting the size right matters as much as the furnace itself. An undersized furnace runs constantly and wears out early; an oversized one cycles on and off too often and wastes fuel. We size every installation and replacement using a proper CSA F280 heat loss and heat gain calculation for your specific home, not a rough estimate based on square footage alone.
