Know The Signs

What Are the Warning Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair?

A furnace that is noisy, smells off, cycles constantly, or costs more to run than it used to is telling you something specific, not just “getting old.” Here is what each symptom actually means.

Noisy Operation

Banging or grinding usually points to a loose or failing blower component, not a furnace at the end of its life.

Poor Air Quality

A musty or stale smell from the vents is typically bacteria or mold buildup in the ductwork, not the furnace burning improperly.

Reduced Heating Capacity

Rooms that used to heat evenly now run cold, often a clogged filter or a failing blower motor.

Rising Energy Bills

A furnace working harder to hit the same temperature is losing efficiency somewhere, often the heat exchanger or ignition system.

Burning or Smoke-Like Odors

Almost always an electrical fault or a cracked heat exchanger. Stop using the furnace and call us immediately.

Yellow or Flickering Pilot Light

Instead of a steady blue flame, this usually means incomplete combustion.

Constant Cycling On and Off

Points to a thermostat, flame sensor, or airflow problem, not a furnace that is simply worn out.

Difficulty Starting or Staying On

Often ignition or gas-supply related, worth a same-day diagnostic before it fails completely.

Soot or Rust Around the Unit

A sign of incomplete combustion or a slow water leak inside the cabinet.

Recognize one of these? Call (905) 689-3777 and we’ll get a technician out to diagnose it.

No Surprises

How Much Does Furnace Repair Cost?

Most single-component repairs run $150 to $900. Here is the real breakdown by part, not just “it depends.”

Furnace Service / RepairEstimated Cost
Diagnostic / Service Call$80 – $150
Flame Sensor Replacement$75 – $200
Ignitor Replacement$150 – $300
Blower Motor Replacement$300 – $650
Gas Valve Replacement$300 – $700
Control Board Replacement$400 – $900
Heat Exchanger Repair / Replacement$500 – $1,500+

After-hours or emergency calls typically add $100–$200 to the total. We always diagnose and quote before any work starts, so you know the number before you commit.

Repair or Replace

Should You Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

If repair costs more than half of a new furnace, and your unit is past 15 years old, replacement is usually the better financial call. Age and cost are only two of three inputs that matter.

Age

Most gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years. A major repair past year 15 is a bet against a clock that is already running out.

Repair Cost vs. Replacement Cost

A $3,800 to $12,000 installed replacement means a $1,500+ heat exchanger repair on an older unit is rarely the better bet.

Original Sizing

A furnace never correctly sized for the home, common in older Burlington and Hamilton housing with finished basements or additions, will keep failing regardless of repairs. Any repair-vs-replace decision should include a load calculation to the CSA F280 standard, not a rough square-footage guess.

Rebates

Is Furnace Repair Covered by a Rebate in Ontario?

A like-for-like gas furnace repair or replacement is not eligible for any current Ontario rebate. The older Enbridge HER+ program some sites still reference is closed.

Where a rebate does apply is if you switch to a heat pump instead. Under Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings program (Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy, Ontario government supported), the amount depends on what you heat with today: homes already on natural gas qualify for up to $2,000 (cold-climate air-source) or $3,000 (ground-source), while homes currently on oil, propane, electric, or wood heat can qualify for up to $7,500 (air-source) or $12,000 (ground-source). A heat pump water heater adds up to $500, and an eligible smart thermostat adds $100.

A hybrid setup, where a heat pump handles most of the season and your furnace stays in as backup for the coldest days, can also qualify; the furnace itself just is not the subsidized part. We confirm current eligibility and amounts at the time of your quote, since program details change without notice.

What To Expect

What Happens During a Professional Repair Visit?

Diagnosis first, safety check second, and a quote before any parts get touched, not the other way around.

Safety check first.

We check the heat exchanger, ignition system, and gas connections before anything else, this is the step that catches a carbon monoxide risk before it becomes one.

Real diagnosis, not a guess.

We identify the specific failed component (see the cost breakdown above) rather than replacing parts on a hunch.

Quote before we touch anything.

You get the cost before the repair starts, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Honest repair-or-replace advice.

If the honest answer is replace, not repair, we tell you directly and explain why, including a CSA F280 load calculation if your home has never had one.
