Three Questions That Actually Matter
A furnace installation is a bigger decision than a repair, you’re picking equipment that will run your home for the next 15 to 20 years, so getting the sizing, the fuel type, and the quote itself right the first time saves real money over that whole lifespan.
In our experience, the single most common mistake homeowners make is comparing quotes on price alone without checking whether each quote includes the same scope of work, see the checklist further down before you sign anything. A properly matched installation also means increased energy efficiency, safer operation, better indoor air quality, and more even heating throughout the home.
Repair or Replace
When Does a Furnace Need Replacing, Not Repairing?
A furnace earns a replacement recommendation when several of these line up at once, not just one.
Age Past 15–20 Years
Most gas furnaces are designed for that lifespan, and repair parts get harder to source as a unit ages out of production.
Repeated Repairs, One Season
More than one repair call in the last 12 months means the unit is telling you something a single fix won’t solve.
Rising Bills, Same Usage
A sign the unit is losing efficiency faster than a repair can recover.
Never Sized Correctly
Common in older Burlington and Hamilton housing with finished basements or additions. Repair after repair on a mis-sized unit just delays the same conversation.
Repair Quote > Half of New Install
At that point the math almost always favours replacement.
No Surprises
How Much Does Furnace Installation Cost in Ontario?
Installed pricing runs $3,500 to $9,000, with most homeowners landing between $4,500 and $7,000. Fuel type is the biggest driver.
| Furnace Type | Estimated Cost |
|---|---|
| Electric Furnace | $2,500 – $6,000 |
| Standard-Efficiency Gas Furnace | $3,500 – $6,500 |
| High-Efficiency Gas Furnace (95%+ AFUE) | $5,500 – $9,000 |
| Oil Furnace | $6,000 – $10,000 |
A high-efficiency furnace costs more upfront but typically pays some of that back through lower monthly gas bills. Ductwork modifications, an electrical panel upgrade, or converting from oil to gas each add cost on top of the numbers above, your quote should call these out separately.
Compare Quotes Fairly
What Should Be Included in Your Installation Quote?
Two quotes at very different prices sometimes cover very different scopes of work. A complete installed quote should itemize:
The furnace unit and model
By brand and AFUE rating, not just “a furnace.”
Removal and disposal of your old unit
Labor
Mounting, gas or electrical connection, and venting.
Ductwork connection
And any modification if your existing ducts don’t match the new unit.
Startup and combustion analysis testing
The safety check confirming correct combustion before the crew leaves.
Municipal permit and inspection fees
Thermostat connection or upgrade
If a quote doesn’t break these out individually, ask for the itemized version before you sign, the easiest way to catch an apples-to-oranges comparison between contractors.
Choosing Your System
Gas, Electric, or High-Efficiency: Which Furnace Should You Install?
Standard Gas Furnace
The lowest upfront cost of the gas options, a solid choice if your current ductwork and venting are already in good shape.
High-Efficiency Gas (95%+ AFUE)
Higher equipment cost, lower monthly gas bills, often the better long-term math if you’re staying in the home more than a few years.
Electric Furnace
Lower installed cost than gas, but higher ongoing operating cost in most of Ontario, worth checking against your actual electricity rate first.
Getting the size right matters as much as the furnace itself. An undersized furnace runs constantly and wears out early; an oversized one cycles on and off too often and wastes fuel. We size every installation and replacement using a proper CSA F280 heat loss and heat gain calculation for your specific home, not a rough estimate based on square footage alone.
Whichever you choose, correct CSA F280 sizing matters more than the brand on the unit.
Rebates
Is Furnace Installation Covered by a Rebate in Ontario?
Two quotes at very different prices sometimes cover very different scopes of work. A complete installed quote should itemize:
A like-for-like gas furnace replacement is not itself rebate-eligible under Ontario’s current program. But if you’re already replacing your furnace, it’s worth knowing what would qualify before you rule out a heat pump entirely.
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings program (Enbridge Gas & Save on Energy, Ontario government support) offers a cold-climate heat pump rebate of up to $2,000 for natural-gas-heated homes ($500/ton) and up to $7,500 for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane, or wood ($1,250/ton), with ground-source systems eligible up to $12,000.
Since most homes in our service area heat with natural gas, the $2,000 tier is the realistic number for most CHAC customers, not the larger figure that applies to non-gas homes. We confirm exact eligibility and current amounts at the time of your quote.
What To Expect
What Happens During a Professional Furnace Installation?
CSA F280 load calculation
If your home has never had one, so the new unit is sized to your home, not just matched to the old one.
Removal, disposal, and installation
Old furnace out, new unit connected, gas or electrical, venting, and ductwork.
Startup and combustion analysis testing
Confirms safe, correct combustion, not just that the furnace turns on.
Thermostat connection or upgrade
Connected and walked through before we leave.
Full itemized invoice
Matching what was quoted, no surprise line items.

Very happy with the end-to-end experience with Canadian Heating and Air Conditioning. I highly recommend this company. I had to replace my furnace so I met with several companies and received multiple quotes. My advisor, Max, was really great to deal with - responsive, reliable and trustworthy. I can't say the same for many of the other companies I met with. He put together a package that exactly met our requirements for features, cost and installation timing. Plus, he was the only one who was thoughtful-enough to offer us the use of temporary heaters so we didn't freeze! The installation was equally impressive. Hans showed-up at 9am on the dot - exactly as agreed. The install went super smoothly and heat was returned quickly to the house. The new furnace install looks great and the furnace room was left even cleaner than when found! So great to have reliable heat again - a big thank you to Max, Hans and the CH&AC team!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
